A new midshelf record in the northern Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic, CBT-CS11 core): sedimentological, geochemical and palynological data over the last 7 kyrs ArchiMer
Penaud, Aurélie; Ganne, Axelle; Coste, Pierre-olivier; Herlédan, Maïwenn; Durand, Matthieu; Mojtahid, Meryem; Nizou, Jean; Toucanne, Samuel.
The high-time resolution (∼70 years in average) multi-proxy analysis conducted on the midshelf core CBT-CS11 (47°46.429’N; 4°25.308’W; 73m depth; 3.96 m long; NW France, S Brittany) revealed the complexity of the palaeohydrological and palaeoclimatic signals recorded over the last 7 kyrs in the recently published paper: “Oceanic versus continental influences over the last 7 kyrs from a midshelf record in the northern Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic)” [1]. This study presents the whole CBT-CS11 dataset discussed in [1] including sedimentological (XRF and grain-size (total from [1] and CaCO3-free from [2]) analyses), geochemical (oxygen and carbon stable isotopes on two different benthic foraminiferal species: Ammonia falsobeccarii from [1] and Cibicides...

Caractéristiques physiques et chimiques fines des cendres volcaniques : application à la téphrostratigraphie ArchiMer
Jouannic, Gwénolé.
The challenge of this work was to carry out several tephrostratigraphic studies in various sedimentary environments in order to test the efficiency of classical detection methods of tephra layers. First, analysis has been focused on tephra keys, previously studied in known sites, in Belgium and in the Jura Mountains, in order to update data with current analytical techniques. This work was later expanded to sites from eastern French Massif Central, an area with unexploited tephrostratigraphic potential, which offers the possibility to precise the source of cryptotephras identified in the Jura and Switzerland whose origin was uncertain. This work has been carried out in tephras sampled in loess, carbonate maris and peat allowing to discuss conservation...

Digital mapping of soil attributes using machine learning Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Campbell,Patrícia Morais da Matta; Francelino,Márcio Rocha; Fernandes Filho,Elpídio Inácio; Rocha,Pablo de Azevedo; Azevedo,Bruno Campbell de.
ABSTRACT Mapping the chemical attributes of the soil on a large scale can result in gains when planning the use and occupation of the land. There are different techniques available for this purpose, whose performance should be tested for different types of landscapes. The aim of this study was to spatialize chemical attributes of the soil, comparing eight methods of prediction. Forty morphometric attributes, generated from a digital elevation model, were used as independent variables, in addition to geophysical data, images from the Landsat 8 satellite and the NDVI. All possible combinations between the satellite bands were calculated, generating 28 new variables. Combinations between the Th, U and K bands obtained from the geophysical data were also...

Geochemical Signature of Amazon Tropical Rainforest Soils Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Souza,José João Lelis Leal de; Fontes,Maurício Paulo Ferreira; Gilkes,Robert; Costa,Liovando Marciano da; Oliveira,Teogenes Senna de.
ABSTRACT: Evaluating soil geochemical diversity in the Amazon Basin has been a challenge largely because most study sites have been at the edge of the basin and it is difficult to get samples in such a region. Here we show that even among the most weathered soils, physicochemical soil properties express lithology. Our results are based on topsoil samples collected from different locations in minimally disturbed areas in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Soil properties were measured using methods which are suitable for highly developed soils. The Chemical Index Alteration and Weathering Index of Parker was calculated based on the content of metal(loid)s in soils determined by X-ray fluorescence. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and Principal...

Influence of accumulation of heaps of steel slag on the environment: determination of heavy metals content in the soils Anais da ABC (AABC)
Garcia-Guinea,Javier; Correcher,Virgilio; Recio-Vazquez,Lorena; Crespo-Feo,Elena; Gonzalez-Martin,Rafael; Tormo,Laura.
The presence of high level of heavy metals involves a human healthy risk that could induce chronic diseases. This work reports on the metal contamination due to heaps of steel-slag accumulated during more than 40 years in allotments and industrial areas in the southern part of Madrid (Spain). Several slag and soil samples were collected in an area of 10 km² and characterized by different conventional (XRD and XRF) and no so common methods (ESEM, thermoluminescence and EDS-WDS). The analysis reveal the presence of: (i) important amounts of Fe (43%), Mg (26%), Cr (1.1%), Mn (4.6%), S (6.5%) in the form of Fe-rich slag phases (wustite, magnetite...), Si and Ca-rich phases (larnite, ghelenite...), Cr (chromite), Mn (bustamite) and graphite, (ii) traces of some...
